Four Day Tour - Lhasa
This tour is available daily and the start time can be adjusted at your request. Our tours typically start between 7am and 8:30am with your tour guide picking you up in the lobby of your hotel. At the end of the day we'll return you to your hotel.
We'll pick you up from the airport or train station and take you to your hotel. There are no scheduled tours for the first day to allow you to rest and begin to acclimatize to the high altitude. It is highly recommended to rest and stay hydrated. Feel free to explore the local shops and restaurants if you feel up to it.
We'll begin our day at the Potala Palace which was a residence of the Dalai Lama since the 7th century. It is now a World Heritage Site and museum. The original section of the palace was constructed in 1645 and has had numerous additions since.
The red section is known as the "Red Palace" and contains halls, chapels, and shrines of past Dalai Lamas. The "White Palace" makes up the living quarters of the Dalai Lama and his monks. The other side of the "Red Palace" is devoted entirely to religious study and prayer. This side of the palace contains golden tombs of eight Dalai Lamas, numerous chapels, shrines and libraries of scriptures.
The only way up to the palace is by climbing the stairs. Make the ascent in stages and take your time to enjoy the view!
We'll have lunch at a local restaurant before exploring Jokhang Temple, Bakhor Street and the surrounding areas. The first section of the Jokhang Temple was built in the mid 600's (AD) and is considered the most sacred and important temple in Tibet, hence it is the ultimate destination for pilgrims. Additional sections of the temple were added over the years with the last addition being constructed in 1610.
Barkhor street is located in the old section of Lhasa and circles Jokhang Monastery. Buddhist pilgrims traverse this street in a clockwise direction with their prayer wheels from dusk to dawn. Some pilgrims crawl along the street advancing body length by body length. Many of the pilgrims have walked thousands of miles to pray at the Jokhang Monastery.
